IBAN and NRB validator - check bank account number
The IBAN and NRB Validator allows you to check the format, length, and MOD 97 checksum of your account number, and convert Polish NRBs to IBANs. It also identifies the correct Polish account based on official NBP EWIB data.
The validator uses the IBAN SWIFT format register and NBP EWIB data. A correct result and bank identification do not confirm the existence of the account, its activity, or its owner.
How to check your bank account number?
Paste the IBAN or Polish NRB into the validator field. Spaces and dashes will be automatically removed, so you can copy the receipt directly from the invoice or document. Then run the IBAN check and read the technical result.
- Paste the number
Enter a foreign IBAN or a Polish account number containing 26 digits.
- Run validation
The tool will check the structure, country code, length and MOD 97 checksum.
- Read the result
For Poland you will also see the NRB, sort code and institution from EWIB NBP.
- Keep checking
You can copy the result, save it locally or print it to PDF.
What does the IBAN and NRB validator check?
The IBAN validator checks the country code, expected account length, and structure, and verifies the IBAN checksum using the MOD 97 method. For a Polish number, it displays the IBAN, 26-digit NRB, and eight-digit sort code. If the Polish account is technically valid, the tool queries the official NBP EWIB for the bank or other institution assigned to that sort code.
Technical check helps detect incorrect length, country code or checksum.
A correct Polish NRB is saved as an IBAN by adding the country code PL.
For Poland, the sort code is read, not the account owner details.
NRB and IBAN – what is the difference?
The NRB is the Polish account standard used for domestic settlements. It always has 26 digits: two check digits, eight sort code digits, and sixteen account sequential digits. The Polish IBAN is 28 characters long because the NRB is preceded by the country code "PL.".
NRB - 26 digits
2 check digits + 8 sort code digits + 16 account number digits.
IBAN Poland - 28 characters
PL country code + full 26-digit NRB number.
How to convert NRB to IBAN?
To derive an IBAN from an account number in NRB format, add the country code PL. The NRB-IBAN converter in the tool performs this conversion automatically and displays both the electronic version and a readable version separated by spaces. It is not a new account generator; the tool only converts the entered number.
How does the validator check the validity of the IBAN?
After clearing the number, the validator checks the IBAN format appropriate for the specified country and then performs a MOD 97 check. These check digits can detect many common errors that occur when transcribing an account. A correct result indicates technical compliance with the standard, but does not prove that the bank actually maintains such an account.
Before transferring, always compare the number with a reliable document or confirm it directly with the recipient.
What bank is this based on the account number?
In the Polish National Bank of Poland (NRB), after two check digits, there is an eight-digit sort code for the bank or other authorized institution. Taxenlight extracts only this fragment and passes it to the public EWIB 2.0 API operated by the National Bank of Poland.
The result will show the current institution name returned by EWIB, and if data is available, the entity name and BIC. The full account number is not sent to the National Bank of Poland (NBP). The tool does not use a static table of bank codes.
Does a correct IBAN mean that the account exists?
No. A positive MOD 97 confirms the technical accuracy of the number. The bank identification indicates the institution associated with the Polish sort code. None of these results confirm the existence or activity of a specific account or allow for the identification of its owner.
The White List answers another question: whether a specific account was assigned to a given Tax Identification Number on a given day.
IBAN and SWIFT/BIC – what is the difference?
IBAN
Identifies a bank account in a standardized international format.
SWIFT/BIC
Identifies the financial institution used for communication and settlement.
The validator checks the IBAN. Any BIC shown for the Polish number comes from the National Bank of Poland's EWIB; the tool is not a search engine or SWIFT/BIC code generator.
When is it worth checking your IBAN number?
Before transfer
Detect format or checksum errors before approving payments.
With the contractor's data
Please check the number before saving it in your accounting or payment system.
After copying from the invoice
Verify that no characters were omitted or replaced when manually entering them.
When paying abroad
Please check the country, length and MOD 97 before transferring VAT or other charges abroad.
Technical validation reduces the risk of typos, but does not replace confirmation of the recipient and purpose of the payment.
IBAN and NRB Validator – Frequently Asked Questions
How to check if the IBAN number is correct?
Paste the IBAN into the validator and run the check. The tool will remove spaces and dashes, check the country code, required length, structure, and MOD 97 checksum. A positive result confirms technical correctness, not the existence of the account.
How many characters does a Polish IBAN have?
The Polish IBAN is 28 characters long: the two-letter country code PL and the 26-digit Polish NRB. On paper, it may be separated by spaces into readable groups, but after removing them, the length must be exactly 28 characters.
How many digits does a Polish NRB account number have?
The Polish NRB has 26 digits. The first two are a checksum, the next eight constitute the sort code, and the last sixteen are the account sequential number. The NRB itself does not contain the Polish country code.
How to convert NRB to IBAN?
Add the Polish country code before the valid 26-digit NRB number. The validator performs this conversion automatically and displays the finished IBAN record. It doesn't create a new account or new check digits—it only converts the existing Polish NRB.
What does MOD 97 mean in IBAN?
MOD 97 is a digit verification mechanism used in the IBAN standard. The validator converts the number according to the standard's rules and checks the remainder of the division. This helps detect many transcription errors but does not confirm account activity.
Does a correct IBAN mean that the account exists?
No. The correct format, length, and checksum only indicate the number's technical compliance with the standard. The validator does not connect to the banking system and does not confirm whether the account exists, is active, or can accept a transfer.
How to check which bank it is by account number?
For a valid Polish account, the tool reads the eight-digit sort code and queries the official NBP EWIB for the assigned institution. Only the sort code is sent to the NBP, not the full IBAN or NRB.
Can the account owner be identified from the account number?
Not with this validator. The account number and bank code do not reveal the owner's details. Identifying the institution in the EWIB does not confirm who holds the specific account. The recipient's details should be verified with an appropriate, reliable source.
What is the difference between IBAN and SWIFT/BIC?
The IBAN identifies a bank account according to the international standard, while the BIC identifies a financial institution. These are different identifiers. The validator checks the IBAN; any BIC for a Polish account is merely information returned by the National Bank of Poland's EWIB.
Do I need to add PL to my Polish account number?
For payments requiring the IBAN format, the country code PL is added before the 26-digit Polish NRB. In a national form accepting NRBs, the 26-digit string may be sufficient. Always use the format required by your bank or payment system.
